Plastic formwork emerges at this time, having many advantages compared to traditional wooden formwork, but also some disadvantages. This article will analyze the pros and cons of plastic formwork.

I. Advantages of Plastic Formwork

1. High Strength and High Toughness

Unlike traditional wooden formwork, plastic formwork has high material strength, is wear-resistant, has good shock resistance, long service life, and strong crack resistance. Plastic formwork is also highly tough and not easily broken. Additionally, because plastic formwork is manufactured as an integrated unit, the plates have a high degree of tightness, making it difficult for water to seep or leak through. These characteristics allow plastic formwork to be used multiple times, saving both money and time.

2. Easy to Disassemble and Install

Plastic formwork is convenient for cutting, splicing, and drilling, and can be processed using tools such as saws, planes, and drills. When dismantling the formwork, it will not cut the steel bars or damage the concrete surface, avoiding secondary damage to the concrete and facilitating subsequent repairs and decoration.

3. Environmentally Friendly

Traditional wooden formwork typically has a service life of only 3-5 times and is prone to mold and deterioration after use, posing a certain degree of pollution to the environment. However, plastic formwork can be reused over 20 times and remains intact after multiple uses, without causing negative environmental impacts.

4. Lightweight

Plastic formwork is lightweight, making it easy to handle, unload, install, and dismantle. With a weight of approximately 20kg per square meter, it is more than 50% lighter than traditional wooden formwork.

5. Recyclable

Compared to wooden and steel formwork, plastic formwork is easier to recycle, dispose of, and utilize after abandonment. Plastic materials have better recyclability and can be added to high-tech substances or used as recycled raw materials for circular utilization, thus achieving the goal of "low carbon and environmental protection."

II. Disadvantages of Plastic Formwork

1. Higher Cost

Compared to traditional wooden formwork, the cost of plastic formwork is much higher, which makes it unsuitable for use in smaller-scale projects with limited funding from owners.

2. Poor Weatherability

The weatherability of plastic formwork is relatively poor, especially in high-temperature and rainy environments, where it is prone to aging, warping, and cracking, thereby affecting its service life.

3. Unsupported Use for Large Spans

Plastic formwork does not support use for large spans and has certain load-bearing limitations due to its poor elongation and relatively narrow panel width. It is not suitable for use in the construction of high-rise buildings.

In general, plastic formwork has many advantages compared to wooden formwork, such as high strength, lightweight, and ease of operation. However, its disadvantages, such as higher cost, poor weatherability, and unsupported use for large spans, must also be considered during practical application. Therefore, when using it in practice, appropriate construction formwork should be selected based on specific circumstances to ensure construction quality.
